Sunday, 07 Feb 2010
According to the information provided by the Turkish Iron and Steel Producers' Association, in 2009 Turkey's long steel production declined by 8.18% YoY amounting to 20.4 million tonnes. Long steel production accounted for 80.62% of the country's total steel production during the year in question.

Meanwhile, during 2009, the country's flat steel output continued its rise, increasing by 14.61% as compared to 2008, mainly due to commissioning of new capacities by Turkey's only integrated steel producer Erdemir and totaled 4.46 million tonnes. Flat steel production constituted 18.82% of total domestic steel output.

In 2009, Turkey's special steel output totaled 142,000 tonnes, decreasing by 67.36% YoY. In the given period, Turkey produced 25.3 million tonnes of steel, 5.61% down on 2008.

The production performed by electric arc furnace plants declined by 10.27% YoY mainly due to lower capacity utilization rates, while steel production using blast furnaces increased by 7.5% compared to 2008. In 2009, 70.11% of production came from mini-mills with the remaining 29.89% coming from integrated plants.
