Nucor Corp moved past US Steel Corp for the first time as the largest American steelmaker by sales although the global recession cut revenue at each company by about 53% YoY.

Nucor 2009 sales fell to USD 11.2 billion from USD 23.7 billion in 2008 while US Steel sales dropped to USD 11 billion in 2009 from USD 23.8 billion in 2008.

Capacity utilization averaged 54% at Nucor in 2009 and 48% at US Steel, excluding its European operations.
